A hot day on Yas Island

By 9:00 on our first morning, the family was still as asleep, so I went for a swim by myself. By this time it was already 35'C outside!

On the way back from the pool I saw a very cute children's playground with a children's buffet set up amongst the toys. I went upstairs to get my togs off so I could go find out about the buffet. By then Alex was awake so he came downstairs with me. When we got down there it was just about to close, so Alex just grabbed a couple of chocolate covered strawberries. Ryan got woken up to eat his strawberry.

Breakfast in bed
After that we all went downstairs for a swim. We spent the next 3 or 4 hours outside. We were mostly in the pool but occasionally got out to brave the 'feeling like 50'C' heat in the shade.

After the time at the pool, the boys spotted a clown doing face painting in the kids area. They can't go past face paint.

There was some Tom & Jerry on the TV, so it took me ages to drag them away from there...

We spent some time looking at the Yas Marine Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit from our hotel room. The boys had lots of questions about it. It would be fun watching the race with them in November trying to spot our hotel...

Later in the afternoon we took a drive to IKEA - the only shopping area we knew of on the island (they are still building Yas Marina Mall).

 Past Ferrari World

The boys went for a play at Smaland again...

We went for a quick snack and then went for a look around. I only bought one thing.

We picked the boys up and then all had IKEA hotdogs and ice cream for dinner.

It was about 8:00 when we got back to the hotel and went for another swim.

When we got back to our room the lights were on at the race tracks. It must've been some track day (or night actually), because there were all kinds of cars racing around on the track.

And that should've been the end of the day...

But then at 10:45 the fire alarm went off....a painfully loud siren! An announcement came that we need to evacuate immediately. It took a few moments finding shoes and passports and we were out of there. We went to the closest flight of stairs, which were an outside stairwell and it was about 50'C in there. The boys were convinced that it was so hot because the fire was there.
We decided to take the inside stairs instead. Just as we got there, another announcement came that everything was clear and that we can 'return to what we were doing previously'.

The boys were completely freaked out. It took a good hour after that to debrief with boys cuddled with me on our bed. There were lots of what-if questions. Ryan ended up falling asleep in my arms.

It meant another post midnight bedtime for us.
