Fort bij Uithoorn

A friend of a friend has got the keys to this fort and offered to take us around. We turned up on a wet Friday afternoon, and rushed inside.

In we go...

Fort bij Uithoorn was one of the 48 forts in the Defence Line of Amsterdam....which is now a World Heritage site.

Hans gave us lots of information about why the fort was built, how it operated, for what it has been used since the war, etc, etc...
The fort had lots of interesting bits and pieces everywhere. It was dark with lots of alleys to explore.

These stalactites started forming in the cracks of the ceiling because of the calcium in the sand above the fort.

By the time we got to have a look at the outside, the rain had disappeared.

This is where one of the canons used to be.

Here is a bit out of Ryan's writing for the day:

It was pretty cool to get a personalised tour of this fort.
