Wimbledon

I've been to Twickenham, Lord's and the Oval when I lived in the London area back in 1999 and 2000. I wanted to go to Wimbledon as well, but never got the chance. So, when my brother said he could get us some tickets for Wimbledon, I was very excited.

It was a beautiful day in London - the hottest day so far this year. The boys were happy just getting to
the Wimbledon area. They got to sit at the front of a double decker bus and then wait for a train at a very busy station.

A school friend of mine has a little coffee shop, the Coffee Cup, in Wimbledon. We stopped in there to say hello and have some milkshakes. It also seemed appropriate to have a waffle with strawberries and cream. It was really yum and also good to catch up. Thank you Adele and Fanie.

We then walked through a park and past Wimbledon train station. We got on a bus to save us the 30 minute walk to the grounds, but the bus went the wrong direction. Finally got on the right bus which went to the tennis....and then past the tennis.... as the stop at Wimbledon was cancelled. We had a kilometre walk back.

But we got there in the end and then we collected our tickets and everyone was happy....

The plan was to get to court 12 where McEnroe was playing, but we walked past this Qualifying Gentleman's Doubles match and the boys went to have a look and then found some seats so we watched the rest of the game.

Next they wanted to watch a singles match. As you can imagine there were LOTS of why, when, how questions. As of 2 days ago the boys did not know anything about the game of tennis. It was a challenge to try and explain the complicated scoring system to them. Then there was also the ball boys, lines men and umpire's roles to explain.

While the boys was watching the singles junior game, we watched Novik Djokovik practice on the next court over.

We had ground tickets which only allowed us access to the outside courts. But when we walked past Court 2 they were letting people in during the players' break times. We took the chance to go in. We watched the Men's Doubles Quarter Final.

It was pretty warm for London, so before we headed home the boys got their hats all wet to keep them cool on the trip home.

It was another great day in London!!

When we got home, the boys just wanted to watch more tennis. It looks like we've added one more sport to their world....
